As the lockdowns continue and more than 5 million Sydney-siders are today ordered to remain in lockdown for another 10 days, you’d be forgiven for wondering if this debacle will ever end. Is there an end in sight and when can we return to “normal”?
One of the things that I have learnt from these past 18 months is that the concept of “normal” has been challenged and it will be those that are able to remain flexible and nimble that will survive in this new business world. As many businesses continue to be severely impacted by the pandemic, there are enterprises that are seizing this opportunity to innovate and grow. From spawning takeaway offerings, online retail and remote working; there are a number of “booms” in these otherwise restrictive times. What sets these people apart from the mainstream?
How can these businesses flourish when many are experiencing crippling restrictions and loss of income? The deciding factor, as it often is, seems to be the mindset of those at the helm.
Where is our focus?
“There are two ways to see the world. Some people see what they want… Others see what prevents them from getting what they want.”
Simon Sinek
It is far too common to see media montages of closed retail outlets, hospitality venues unable to hire casual staff and the international borders being closed. We know this is only a component of the reality and that there are many other industries being heavily affected by these restrictions. However, it seems that those who are truly focused on what they want are finding an intrinsic drive to be creative. They are finding ways to pivot and continue achieving their goals. On the other hand are those that are only focused on what is preventing them from getting what they want. The inconveniences, regulation and health orders that are limiting but not completely prohibitive to achieving our goals.
Now I’m not saying that this pandemic and the associated restrictions haven’t been crippling to many sectors. What I am saying is that focusing on exactly what we are wanting to achieve and maintaining a strong positive belief that we can find a way; will assist in getting the creativity flowing and allow you to pivot in ways that “the good ‘ole days” never provided an environment to do. Take advantage of the time to stop and re-adjust. Think, brainstorm and analyse your true goals. Really focus on what it is you are trying to achieve and then get creative with your solutions. Focus on what you want and there will be a way.
As Ray Dalio says, “Pain + reflection = progress”.
The pain is real, and lockdowns provide plenty of time for reflection…
Progress, here we come!
